Take a long hard look at your current logo, or if you do not have one, take a look at some early concepts you created for it. Now ask yourself this one mighty question, does your logo look a little too familiar? Does it look like other logos? Does it look like a lot of other logos? If the answer is yes, it might be time to get in touch with a graphic designer and go back to the drawing board.
Graphic Design, Warning Signs
So, you have spent some quiet time alone with your logo, you have analyzed the shit out of it, but you are still not sure if your logo is a dud or not. Here are some things to look for:
• Are you using a ‘swooping’ graphic to express a specific type of energy, with the aim of coming across as dynamic and aspirational? Does this particular graphic remind you of Citibank or Nike perhaps? If the answer is yes, or even if the answer is maybe then you might be making one of the five deadly mistakes in logo design.
• Another tricky little devil that may be lurking within your logo, causing prospective customers to glaze over when exposed to it, is your font. There are two particular fonts that have had their time in the sun and they go by the names of Helvetica and Comic Sans. You can refrain from beating yourself with a stick if you happen to be using one of these nasty little guys, it is an easy enough fix.
Need A Change of Logo Design Pace?
Those two pesky red flags of logo design are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Whether you are doing a revamp of your old logo or brainstorming on a new graphic design, it is good practice to look at what is being done now and what has been done too much. Then, as we like to remind you, take a minute to do some research and experiment with how far is too far when thinking outside of the box.
Do Not Worry, This Is The Fun Part
The graphic design world is full of endless possibilities, and yes, many should remain unexplored, but there are a few gems just waiting to become the next great brand design. There is only one way to differentiate the garbage concepts from the golden nuggets, and that is by trying them on for size. One shoe does not fit all, but you will never know which one is your glass slipper until you try.
Take A Breath, And Take A Risk
Work with a talented graphic designer to explore the unexplored. Take risks with what may seem too far out there, or what may seem like a mistake. You never know until you see it fully fleshed out, so have fun with your designer and come up with a killer concept that makes sparks fly!
